The Heterophile Antibodies in Infectious Mononucle - Osis and after the Injection of Serum ' by Peter Beer

چکیده
Recent investigations have shown that the socalled heterophile antibodies found in cases of infectious mononucleosis and after injection of horse serum have distinguishing serological characteristics. These findings may prove helpful for differential diagnosis in certain cases with borderline titers or high titers of sheep cell agglutinins, particularly in children and adults with a history of previous serum injection. The present paper deals with a study of the heterophile antibodies in sera from normal persons, from cases of infectious mononucleosis and from individuals who have received injections of serum. The purpose of this investigation was to define more clearly the differences among these sera and to determine the possibilities for using them in differential diagnosis.

For many years, the Paul-Bunnell reaction (Paul and Bunnell, 1932) to demonstrate the presence of heterophile antibodies to sheep red cells has been accepted as a specific test for establishing the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis. Stuart (1935), Bailey and Raffel (1935), and Davidsohn and Walker (1935) independently differentiated the antibodies for Forssman antigen and those of serum sic...

Introduction: Intravenous drug users as a serious health problem in communities have economical and social effects as well as health and hygienic complications. Viral infections may be transmitted through drug injection by shared syringes among users. The aim of this study has been to determine the relative frequency of HBV, HCV and HIV infection’s markers as epidemiological data in Ahvaz. Ma...
متن کاملThe Diagnostic Importance of the Heterophile Antibody Test in Leukemia.
With the demonstration by Paul and Bunnell (1) of an increased titer of heterophile antibodies in the blood serum of patients suffering from infectious mononucleosis, the heterophile antibody test has been introduced into the field of clinical usefulness. Previous to the observations of thesc authors in 1932, it had been recognized that the blood of most normal individuals contained, in low con...

Abstract Background and Objective: Leptospirosis is a zoonosis infectious disease that is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions and is caused by the pathogenic serovars of leptospires. Hence, we aimed at investigating the prevalence of antibodies against these bacteria in the blood samples of suspected leptospirosis. Material and Methods: the human serum samples (N = 130) were ...
